The monument "Orlenok" – soviet statue to honor young and brave people

The monument «Orlenok» is located in the heart of the city. It was opened in 1958 and became a symbol of Chelyabinsk. «Orlenok» is a generalized image of  a Civil War hero.

Komsomol members of the Chelyabinsk Soviet district proposed to transform the monument of well-known sculpture Lion Golovnitsky and the four-meter bronze figure of a boy-hero was casted in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg).

The bronze statue is wearing adult clothes: hat with ribbon, hood, long coat and heavy boots. The military style doesn’t suit the young body with a baby-face and it shows us that the War was so cruel that even children and women were involved in the conflict. Civil War made battle between generations.

Orlenok’s face is fool of courage and internal tension, but at the same time has the features of a young character.  The boy is looking into the future with a hope and confidence.
